Используя понятия "мужской" и "женский" как метафоры силы и слабости, Адлер (1924) постулировал существование мужского протеста — специфического набора черт, выполняющего у представителей обоего пола функции сверхкомпенсации чувства неполноценности и предрасположенности к неврозам. Позже он использовал термин в более узком смысле, соотнося его с протестом женщины против женской роли.Адлер считал представления Фрейда о зависти к пенису слишком буквальными и биологическими, полагая, что женщина чувствует неполноценность не в связи с физической недостаточностью, а в связи с узаконенным культурой доминированием мужчин. Эта ранняя критика представлений Фрейда о женской психологии проистекала из внимания Адлера к власти как к доминирующей силе человеческой психики. Не соглашаясь с введением понятия мужской протест, Фрейд (1914) отождествил его со страхом кастрации, который он определил как страх мальчика за свой пенис и зависть девочки к пенису.Расходящиеся с фрейдовскими взгляды Адлера обозначали его явное несогласие с биологически ориентированной психологией влечений.
